Central Elementary School is a STEAM facility for Grades 1-2 designed to create an interactive, engaging, and secure learning environment. The design was organized around three distinct wings spanning three levels connected by a central circulation spine. The main entry is on the second level with a floor above and below. Parent and bus drop off areas occur at different levels and at opposite ends of the building as a means of traffic control. A one-story administrative wing provides a secure entry for students and visitors. A three-story educational wing organizes clusters of classrooms around common “learning lanes” that provide flexible learning opportunities adjacent to traditional classrooms. A third wing contains dining and physical activities spaces and is designed and positioned for security and ease of access for after-hours activities and public functions. A central circulation spine connecting the wings is designed as an interactive space that overlooks and traverses a multi-media atrium and is flanked by additional academic spaces which allows activities and the curriculum to be put on display. Outdoor educational spaces including reading areas, a discovery garden, and performance space are linked directly to the interior learning spaces. Bold colors and educational wall graphics are a consistent design feature throughout the facility and enhance the educational experience and provide wayfinding.
