Project Bio
Hancock County School District — Kiln, Mississippi
Hancock North Central Elementary, located in Kiln, Mississippi, is constructed on the site of an existing school. The design of the facility incorporated an innovative ‘Pod’ design which fosters group learning by clustering classrooms around shared group areas instead of traditional corridors. Extensive clerestory windows and skylights provide abundant daylighting to interior spaces. The exterior of the building draws upon imagery from its rural surroundings, with exposed wood and corrugated metal cladding evoking the ubiquitous barns and silos in agrarian area. Sustainable materials such as fly-ash brick, metal panels, exposed wood structure, and board-form concrete were utilized, and the facility holds the distinction of being the first LEED-certified K-12 school in Mississippi. Additionally, areas in the facility meet FEMA 361 Community Shelter guidelines.
