Thad Cochran Southern Horticultural Laboratory
The Thad Cochran Southern Horticultural Laboratory is a new replacement facility of approximately 30,000 s. f. that houses scientists and staff, and extension personnel of the co-located Coastal Branch of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. The SHL facility was about 99 percent complete when hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Having survived wind speeds measured by resident scientists in excess of 130 MPH with only very minor damage, SHL served as the Pearl River County headquarters for FEMA, MEMA and local emergency personnel for several months during the initial disaster response.
