Early Childhood Education Center (ECE)

Perkinston, Mississippi

The new prototypical Early Childhood Education Center is a 9,100 SF facility providing daycare services for children of the Perkinston area and childcare training for students as a part of MGCCC’s curriculum. The building can accommodate 55 children and 10 caregivers and staff. MGCCC students enjoy a large classroom and connected workroom for hands-on education. The age groups of the children are 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, and 4-year-olds. Each age group has its own Day Room with a bathroom directly accessible from within the room. All such bathroom fixtures are child-sized and mounted at the appropriate height. Each Day Room also has hand washing sinks, a drinking fountain, individual cubbies, cot storage, countertop space with overhead cabinets, and direct access to the 1,000 SF covered patio of the playground. The building also has a full-size laundry room with a washer, dryer, and service sink. Food preparation for the facility occurs off-site, although there is a 260 SF catering kitchen with base and wall cabinets, a three-compartment sink with garbage disposal, a commercial-grade dishwasher, a pantry and space for 2 full-size refrigerators to allow for ease of final food preparation and distribution. A workroom for staff with base and wall cabinets, 2 administrative offices, and a sick room with an adjacent bathroom also contribute to the success of the facility. A fenced playground, with a separated 1-year-old area, has an assortment of playground equipment and toys that continues a soft-fall rubber surfacing that is incorporated into the covered patio that is directly accessed from the Day Rooms. The neoclassical architecture blends in with the other traditional buildings on the campus. It uses interior forms and colors in playful ways to reflect and stimulate the imaginations of the children and provide an inviting space.
