MSU College of Architecture

Jackson, Mississippi

Construction has been recently completed to renovate a historic building at 509 East Capitol Street to house the Mississippi State University School of Architecture – Jackson Center. Key Elements of the historic structure, including the exterior elevations, were retained. Interior spaces of the renovated property are a significant departure from typical downtown buildings. Two large light wells giving indirect north light open to first-floor galleries 55 feet below. This effectively cuts the building into three, three-story cubes of space with each level receiving the benefits of natural daylight. The cubes are connected by bridges at the upper levels.
Public spaces include the Jackson Community Design Center, an Architectural Library, and an Audio/Visual Lecture Hall with distance learning capabilities, Faculty and Administration offices, and two galleries. The galleries display two dimensional and three-dimensional works by both students and practitioners.

The constructed concept was a single building that incorporated the three divisions of the College into one facility for convenience, but at the same time, one which allowed each a certain individuality in terms of massing, orientation, accessibility, and identity. The animal hospital is primarily a single-story facility, while the multi-disciplinary laboratory center occupies three and one-half levels, and faculty research is basically a two- and three-level facility.
