Coast Transit Authority — Gulfport, Mississippi
The CTA Gulfport Transit Center project is an adaptive reuse of the historic Harrison County Library building. Originally built in 1966 the building is a classic example of mid-century New Formalism featuring two-story curtainwall, an exterior colonnade, koi ponds, and custom terracotta tile walls. Heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina, the library was vacant until Coast Transit Authority acquired the property. Already designated as a Mississippi Landmark by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the project was also added to the National Register of Historic Places at the completion of the project.
The extensive damage caused by storm surge required that all building systems be replaced or repaired including the terrazzo floor, lighting fixtures, tile walls, and decorative column wraps. The exterior envelope also received severe damage. New technology was used to the project’s full advantage to match the original appearance of the curtainwall and exterior aggregate cladding while still meeting current codes. To protect the historic value of the building, items that could not be faithfully restored or repaired were instead replaced with a neutral material to differentiate between original and new.
