Coast Transit Authority — Gulfport, Mississippi
The architect-led design of the CTA Tram Bridge in Downtown Gulfport is an innovative solution connecting the Jones Park Harbor District to the Mississippi Aquarium District and CTA Transit Center. This ADA-compliant bridge provides a safe pathway for trams, bicycles, and pedestrians. Funded by CTA, the City of Gulfport, and the Federal Transit Authority (FTA), it showcases excellence in design and engineering.
The bridge’s design addresses environmental challenges, including wind load and storm surge, with features like self-cleaning, corrosion-resistant glass railings and a deep piling foundation. The laminated glass panel railing system enhances the aesthetics, complementing the Aquarium and Transit Center. The bridge offers a crucial alternative to the previous grade-level crossing over the busy Highway 90, significantly enhancing safety. Embraced by the community, the bridge embodies optimism and integrates seamlessly into its surroundings, improving both function and visual appeal.
