Gulfport, Mississippi
Mississippi’s only aquarium is named the Mississippi Aquarium and is an iconic landmark symbolizing the resilience of the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the commitment of Gulfport’s City leaders to its continued growth and development.
The Mississippi Aquarium is masterful 4.5-acre project, with four gallery structures, four exterior exhibits, and over 60,000 square feet of innovative exhibit space for animals and guests. Conceived under a federally funded Transit Oriented Development master plan for urban revitalization, the completed Mississippi Aquarium now stands as a centerpiece of Gulfport’s Aquarium-Harbor District.
Housing more than 125 species in approximately a million gallons of aquatic environments, the Mississippi Aquarium exemplifies functionally advanced and visually magnificent spaces. This facility sets a new standard in aquarium design, harmoniously blending architectural innovation and environmental consciousness. Since the completion of the Mississippi Aquarium the annual district visitor count has significantly increased from 165,000 to 500,000, marking a significant milestone in the resurgence of Downtown Gulfport.
