Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College — Gulfport, Mississippi
This prominent, centrally located historic 1936 dormitory was ideal for an adaptive re-use as a central administrative facility for the college. The existing building was organized around a central lobby flanked by two symmetrical “L” shaped wings. The new design placed offices and administrative support functions in the existing dormitory wings and added a new central wing to contain a board room, catering space, and elevator. The addition is connected to the main lobby by a new atrium that allowed preservation of an original bay window. Original elements including plaster walls, coffered ceilings, moldings and trim, wood stairs and heart pine floors were preserved in accordance with MDAH guidelines. Two discreet vestibules flanking the original lobby were created to house ADA lifts to allow access between levels. Details throughout the addition were designed to complement the original building. A new central reception desk is located at the axial intersection of the original wings and the entry to the new atrium.
